Ferran Torres delivers the decisive goal as Lionel Messi’s title defense ends in New Jersey
Spain are world champions for the second time.
We watched Luis de la Fuente’s side defeat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Ferran Torres scored the goal that settled the final.
Spain controlled the match from the opening stages. They kept the ball, dictated the tempo and forced Argentina deep into its own half.

Yamal wins the battle of generations
The final also placed two football eras on the same field.
Spain’s Lamine Yamal, 19, faced Messi, a player 20 years older and one of his childhood idols. Their connection stretches back to 2007.
That year, a 20-year-old Messi posed with five-month-old Yamal during a UNICEF calendar photoshoot. Nineteen years later, Yamal helped Spain remove Messi and Argentina from the world throne.
The image now carries new weight. One generation once held the other as a baby. In New Jersey, the younger star walked away with the trophy.
Spain add another golden chapter
Spain’s first World Cup title came in South Africa in 2010. This second triumph arrives two years after the country won the European Championship.
The result confirms the strength of a gifted Spanish generation. They now hold Europe’s biggest international prize and the most coveted trophy in world football.
For Messi, the ending was painful.
The Argentine captain had produced a brilliant tournament, recording eight goals and four assists. He entered the final chasing another title after Argentina’s 2022 triumph.
Spain closed that door.
Torres supplied the goal. Yamal represented the future. Spain left New Jersey as champions of the world.
